Critical Analysis of Mrs Midas In Mrs Midas, Carol Ann Duffy takes the well-known story of King Midas from Ancient Greek mythology and places it in a modern context from the wife’s perspective. Originally, the story is about King Midas and the power he possesses that turns everything he touches into gold, which leads him to ultimately realise that wealth alone can’t make him happy - even unlimited gold. The moral of the King Midas story is that you can’t buy happiness, and also to be careful what you wish for as greed is sure to overcome you. Is Disobeying A Higher Power - 1194 Words

For as long as history has been recorded the human species has been subject to authority. There has always been somebody for people to answer to. God, a king, or even an elected official. After an extensive history of obeying a higher power the concept has become part of our species culture.Rebellion is frowned upon by society and compliance is expected. When is it right to break the chain and disobey? According to Socrates it is never right to disobey authority, he says â€Å"Consider the logical consequence. If we leave this place without first persuading the state to let us go, are we or are we not doing an injury, and doing it in a quarter where it is least justifiable? Are we or are we not abiding by our just agreement?† In this situation†¦show more content†¦I agree with Milgram that people feel the urge to obey more than they do to follow their own ideas, but I think it’s a habit that can and should be broken. I hear people say all the time â€Å"I don t have a choice.† They fail to realize that they always have a choice. Even if all the other options appear to be worse alternatives they need to be considered, and when a conclusion is made it needs to be a conscious decision. I think that not considering alternative options is a narrow minded approach that only creates more problems. Ultimately the choice someone makes belongs to the individual. The chain of command perverses responsibility. Milgram expresses his opinion on the matter when he says â€Å"It is easy to ignore responsibility when one is only an intermediate link in a chain of command (p511).† If somebody is just a part of a larger action then they pass the responsibility on to the other people taking part. Evaluation of Issues Project Free Essays

When I first received the Issues Introduction Coursework element, I had no clue about which topic I wanted to cover. There is such a variety of Issues in our world ranging from political problems to crucial environmental issues. I decided I would mind map all of my ideas out (anything to do with issues) and I evaluated my choices. I decided I would go down the root of abuse (social issue), which is a very vague topic. It includes sub-topics of physical abuse, discrimination, child abuse and many more. Abuse is a topic, which has affected the British and nearly every single person on this planet: on an international scale we have child labour to electric chairs. This needs to stop now: this may be the root cause of anger, of hatred, of breakdowns in relationships. Abuse is a topic, which has also affected me in some ways during my life, and I thought it was time to put some of my own background into my piece of work; this is a skill, which many directors use in their films. Eg. Steven Spielberg is Jewish, and his film ‘Schindler’s List’ has its point of view to sympathise with the Jews because of the cruelty to them from the Nazis. I was influenced by this director to be very subjective about a topic I am very serious about. I integrated my two art forms through a film. This is using ‘moving images’ and ‘drama. ‘ It is a simple idea but the procedure and the work takes a long time to create. I decided I would use film to show my intended audience (young children, aged 10-12) what the effects of bullying and abuse can cause. A film can use spontaneous language, and I kept the scenes short so they were memorable: this is the purpose of a film. First of all, from my original mind map I began to think of topics, which could be incorporated into my project from abuse. I decided I would go down the root of school bullying, a typical situation which takes place, but it has hybrid topics. It covers discrimination, domestic abuse, physical abuse, verbal abuse and the mentality of bullies. This is because abuse does not come in one form – abuse is caused by something, which enrages people. Through my research I found that through psychology, abuse is caused by a mental issue, which enrages people, which causes a physical outcome (usually negative). There then, is a solution how to calm down, how apologise and stay calm. But when somebody gets bored they begin to aggravate somebody, which can bring on this anger again. It is a â€Å"vicious cycle. † This is exactly what my piece intends to do. It shows that ‘bullying never ends’ and ‘bullying never stops’ and that whenever there is a peak of happiness it eventually falls back down and everybody has to start rebuilding their lives again. This is a scene in my piece at the end of the film. Another theme is that ‘abuse creates more abuse. Her mother has domestically abused Zoi and therefore it’s â€Å"mother-like-daughter†: Zoi begins to bully people too! I created scenes, which would evoke the audience about scenes of abuse, and bullying and I wrote them with more dialogue to create a stream of consciousness (just like Zephaniah’s Neighbours) and this would engage my audience. I researched how girls were mean to each other (using Mean Girls) and I used some of these girls’ characteristics in my own piece. I lastly created a storyboard with quick images and shots on how the audience was going to see this film. I drafted the scenes and the storyboard so I could see what improvements could be made to make my intended audience to make them even more shocked! I used a style model to show how to write and how to present a film script. I took the layout and the font type of this piece to make my own script look professional. I also incorporated some of my critical analysis pieces’ work like having many twists in the films. The Guardian Advert ends with a twist using different shots; I decided I would use my own twist. These are that Zoi is getting domestically abused, and Stacey kills off Anna at the end. It is a very depressing ending, which is what I want my audience to feel left with. I want them to connect, to empathise with Zoi and Anna and show that dreadful things can affect our lives. I want to show my audience that bullies are, and will always be, hated. When also creating my advert poster, I looked at some posters showing abuse and took ideas from here. Like the silhouettes; the purpose of using a silhouette is so the audience can try and convey their own idea to what the character really looks like rather than just filling it black. I also put on some media to give it a modern touch (eg. ewspaper and magazine cuttings for the title) and I also edited the â€Å"girl’s† body to look devilish. A first judgement would make you think that this girl is evil, which is an idea taken from my analysis pieces. Actually, the devil girl becomes a nice, well-mannered pleasant character! My strengths in creating this piece were being able to create a strong film with a message; my scenes were very strong in the way they were acted and the range of shots I used emphasised the raw emotion I wanted to convey to my audience. I used different types of literacy techniques and dramatic techniques too. Eg. In the soliloquy of Anna (a dramatic monologue), I wanted my audience to feel sympathetic to her. My weakness was time keeping. I had a plan, and I tried to stick to it. It took too long filming and editing though. That was the longest part of the project – but in the end I completed my project with success. If I were going to do this project again I would keep time-management at the top of my list because everything else (portfolio etc. ) fell behind. I think that writing my scenes were also strong using a pragmatic lexical choice to involve the audience’s own colloquial language incorporated into my film piece. This would engage the audience because it would feel very comfortable, informal and sort of â€Å"eavesdropping. † Examples of this are â€Å"mates. † I experimented with swearing, which is very bad for a young demographic to hear, but in the end, children will end up hearing this language once they get older anyways. In my opinion, I think that my final piece is very successful in putting its point across to my demographic (young children). If my audience were watching this then they would feel shocked at the end and all the way through, which is its intended primary purpose, with the second being to entertain. This film is full of a hybrid of issues and plot twisting. It conveys symbols of trust and loyalty (hugs and holding hands) as well as scenes, which can shatter trust (i. e. letter in the locker). My piece not only conveys the theme of abuse through a modern media type (film), but it is very personal to those who are murdered, or commit suicide, being school students, being different today! The kayapo people are known as the guardian of the Amazon jungle. They are one of the oldest Indian tribe residing in the Amazon jungle and have been protecting the Jungle from the grips of Technology, modern hood, hunting as well as mining. They were never fond of outside people on their land. However with the passing of time they have become much cordial towards tourists. This is mainly due to the help that the government has provided towards them in providing long term funding for guarding their land. They mainly follow sustainable economic activities such as transforming non Timber forest goods into consumer goods, harvesting, transporting and processing of nuts and many others which have given them a proper livelihood. The Tourists who visit this land are often accompanied by kayapos who help the tourist to learn about different medicinal plants that they often use in their own life. They also help the tourist by making them learn how they hunt and also liv e it in the forest. Nowadays motorized canoes and kayaks are used within this jungle area by tourist people with the help of the tourism industry as well as the kayapo people. This tribal people has been in contact with the outside society since only a few decades and therefore they are still in the learning process about negotiating with the new realities of a capitalist society. External supports are now on helping the people to get accustomed with tourists. They are also helping them to understand and thereby deal with the modern society. This external support is also helping them to be empowered and to continue to protect their land against invaders from different types of ranchers, miners and loggers. Gastronomic Experiences: Each country is known for its gastronomic uniqueness. The gastronomy of a place helps to understand the cultural diversity within a country as well as the footprints left by the other immigrants. Apart from providing natural beauty and varieties of outdoor activities, the cuisine of Brazil has always attracted tourists owing to its uniqueness and variety. Metros are available at night also during Rio Carnival. Tourists can afford taxis within the cities and it makes the journey quite comfortable. Brazil provides good accommodation for the tourists. Rio de Janeiro has expensive hotels than other small countries. ZonaSul, Leblon are the places where people like to stay during Rio Carnival. Sao Paulo has 12000 restaurants, pubs and clubs to provide comforts to the visitors (Meyer 2017). The accommodation in Brazil includes hotels, pousadas, backpackers hostels, campings, aparthotels, resorts, motels and jungle lodgings. The hotels come in various prices and ranges. The most luxurious guesthouses in Brazil are pousadas and it is famous in foreign travelers. Hostels are available in Brazil for young people and it has facilities like dormitories. Campings are not very fascinating among Brazilians and it offers an average quality of comfort. Aparthotels are like small apartments offering kitchens also. Brazilians like the resorts most as it provides all the facilities under one roof. Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro have a large number of resorts in their accommodation lists. Motels are called love hotels and suitable for couples. In Amazon areas, there are some purpose built lodges where tourists may spend nights. These lodges reveal the beauty of nature and known as jungle lodges. Brazil is growing fast in hotel network and it is almost 7% per year (Luchiari and Serrano 2015). Conclusion This project helps to understand the growth and development of Brazil as a tourist place. It is one-in-all destination for all the tourists. Tourists experience from the peace and serenity of the nature to the bustling crowd of the carnival. It represents diversity in every form. Sao Paulo attract tourist owing o its historical importance. Some places such as the statue of Christ the Redeemer, Sao Paulo Museum of Art, Sao Paulo Cathedral, Pinacoteca do Estado de Sao Paulo holds very important place in the history. Other places such as Amazon rainforest and Bahia region attracts tourists for different activities such as hiking and promote ecotourism. The different ethnic groups and their lifestyle have also attracted tourists from worldwide. This project explains the development of tourism in Brazil and its importance for the economic growth of the country. Brazilian government is playing an active role in the growth of tourism by developing transport and accommodation facilities and meeting the needs of the tourists. Do you remember when you went to your school football games and seen the schools mascots. Well how would you like it if the board of education said you were humiliating someone’s cultural? The only way to fix it is to get rid of the mascot that has been symbolizing your school for the last thirty years or so. You would not like it and many students that are in high school with Indian mascots are going through this. Many schools such as Fallbrook also know as the warriors, the El Cajon valley high braves are some of the schools that are some of the high schools that legislation wants to abolish the mascots. The legislation is saying that high school mascots that symbol American Indians are making fun of there cultural. I personally don’t see what can offend them as me being part Indian don’t see anything wrong with it. Mascots are a high school must but what would you do if your teachers said you are making fun of Indians because you are the Fallbrook warriors. Well I would want to know why? Many students are probably not aware of him or her making someone’s cultural. I don’t think they should be saying they are â€Å"humiliating Indian cultural†. As a student I think that many things are wrong with this. First off-instead of changing the school’s mascots because they are ‘humiliating Indians† they should educate the students on were there mascots are from and study the cultural. As for me I don’t think they are offending at all. Mascots are a necessary in high school it’s a way to have fun and get away form classes. Different mascots are better then just one because if we all had the same school mascot it would not be as much fun. As for the schools that have Indians as there mascots don’t make it â€Å"humiliating† they make it honorable. If you ask me I think the legislation should educate their students or their mascots and not waste the money and change them....
